Until recently I had never heard of Tom Sharpe, nor of his books–in particular, his outrageously wonderful novel, WILT published decades agountil I was given a copy as a gift by a delightfully ornery friend.

But a string of unfortunate events including one involving an inflatable plastic female doll start Henry on a farcical journey. As a result the reader gets a glimpse into a National Health Service that values bureaucracy over the well-being of its patients and believes that dignity is an archaic concept best forgotten in the name of efficiency.
It’s very light but totally hilarious. WILT is a remarkably fun read, and enthusiastically recommended. Verdaguer gave medical attention to Sharpe but they were also friends, so she knows a number of first-hand anecdotes. Aug 04, Jane Rocks rated it really liked it.

Jul 05, Sam rated it really liked it. Tom Sharpe never wult It’s a British farce, not consistently funny, and a bit over-the-top but delightful nonetheless, fast and very well written. Not as good as the first one but not terrible either. It’s an outlandish plot, but full of bawdy Brit humor, a very funny book.
And all I can say is: Refresh and try again. I’m sure some of my high school English teachers would have had palpitations to read some of his sentences. Boeken kunnen snel gedateerd raken. She smiled forlornly and implied a breaking marriage which Wilt could save by encouraging her to spend her Monday evenings away from home and the rest of the week reading books rapidly. Somewhere in Girona, or perhaps Barcelona, will be home to the troubled spirit of Wilt.
I first read this book many many years ago when I was in my mid teens, and I remember loving it. No trivia or quizzes yet. Imagine an academic novel written by the Monty Pythons and David Lodge and you will have an idea of this wonderful bit of comic fiction.
