I am surprised that Hoffman’s works did not undergo renewed appreciation when the Tolkein books became popular. Is there nothing at all to this? That’s fantastic — both the Hoffmann stuff and the Hawaiian word. Despite that, the tales also bring some thought to the relation between man and nature, not exaclty a fugere urbem, but a recall on man’s inferiority.

This book needs way more than 5 stars. The Golden Pot and Other Tales. I promise my next one about “The Nutcracker” will be much more accessible, since everyone knows the ballet, and probably e.t.ahoffmann written I feel hazy right now.

So now there’s this tie between Veronica and the witch e.t.a.hfofmann, at the time, the reader is left to puzzle over. I want to read some of the other stories. In all honesty, I’d say it has not stood the test of time or, at least, not in Americaand I’m not certain it should have even though I’m rather fond of his stuff.

I actually read Thomas Carlyle’s translation, downloaded from Googlebooks – which is missing a page and has other flaws. Hoffmann wrote surrealistic stories long before the term surrealism was coined.

Veronica is vying for Anselmus’s affections, because she’s convinced he’ll be Hofrath, and Archivarius wants Anselmus e.t.a.hofmann marry Serpentina. The Sandman, on the other hand, was quite creepy. This is a symptom of the larger tolden with interpreting Hoffmann, which I’ll get to later that the witch is actually Veronica’s old nanny, Liese. Hoffmann’s work on one of e.t.a.hoffmanb own operas, Undinewhich he composed in Dresden between andmay also have influenced The Golden Pot.

Particularly, I did not enjoy the stories as I admire the ones I read before. Whereas the other stories are very surreal, My Cousin’s Corner Window has no fantastic elements but essentially consists of a dialogue between a man and his crippled cousin e.tt.a.hoffmann certain characters in a market place that can be viewed from a window.
