Every detail of the woman’s form and the blazing carriage filled the viewer with an agonizing sense of the hideous torments to be found in the Hell of Searing Heat. The stories deal with pride, arrogance and selfishness and especially cruelty – themes that refer not only to the protagonists of the stories but also, more pervasively, to the wider social milieu of medieval Japan.

From a western perspective, the actual horror of the story is very tame by today’s standards. I am sure I need not tell you it was Yoshihide’s daughter. The Masks and Hoods hepl Lovers. But to assert that he took his lustful pleasure with her is a view that springs from twisted reasoning. Such is the case for the Penguin Mini Modern Classics book Hell Screenwhich contains a couple of hard-hitting short stories by the father of the Japanese short story himself, Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
Some people said the redness came from his moistening his paint brush with his lips, but I wonder about that. At school Akutagawa was an outstanding student, excelling in the Chinese classics. It was grotesque and interesting. A character might originate from a real person, but will be considerably altered in the conceptualization and writing processes.
All else was hushed. The Spider’s Thread is a more allegorical fairytale of a man trying to escape hell.

Another nice thing to say is the way the stories are written. Literature and cinema regularly question the metaphorical -sometimes literal- pact with dark forces that one makes to transcend him her self.

I myself knew several of them who, fearing for their own punishment in the afterlife, wasted no time in leaving his employ. You need only glance at his mansion in the Capital’s Horikawa district to sense the boldness of its conception.
While ‘Spider Thread’ is really short it was enough to make an impact.
If someone had said you really should read this pair of mildly horrific cautionary tales set in medieval Japan I would have probably politely declined as it seems well outside my usual range of interests.
